Clothes for the County

Clothes for "The" County is expanding to include school supplies and backpacks.

Aroostook County located in northern Maine is the largest county east of the Mississippi - it covers over 6,500 square miles with a population of only 74,000 people. It is one of the most depressed areas of the country with little industry. The lumber industry is almost gone and the agriculture is dwindling each year. For the past few years Aid for Kids has been soliciting new clothing* for distribution to the most needy. The rural poor are often over looked as they are hidden in the country side - whereas in the cities they are easy to identify and to help. With the economic situation and the resultant reduction in the school funding many children are coming to school with none of the supplies that are required. The new program being developed will be to join two organizations (like Gifts-in-Kind) where supplies, clothing and other items are available for free and we pay a shipping and handling charge. For every $1 we spend we will receive $143 in goods. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for this project. Just imagine what a different that will make for the families and children in need in Aroostook County.

*A big THANK YOU to WINTER PEOPLE Image Marketing of Freeport, Maine for the many pallets of new clothing, (which included dress shirts, polos, t's, sweatshirts, fleeces, winter and summer jackets, pants, hats and belts) that they have donated over the past few years. In these challenging economic times, we are thankful that WINTER PEOPLE is willing to be so kind-hearted. It says so much about this company - that they look beyond their business to a world full of children who need what they have to give. We are grateful to have them working with us to help the children of the world.
