Typhoon Xangsane hit Central Vietnam: more than 45 dead and US$625 million in material damage

A word from Joy:

October 2, 2006

Dear friends and family,

As you all know there has been a very serious storm in Vietnam. Thousands are now homeless and several provinces in Vietnam are destroyed.  More information can be seen at Thanh Nien News on the web. Any support with volunteers coming for a work mission and or donations to the people of Vietnam would greatly be appreciated. Please send your tax deductible donations to the following address:

From Thanh Nien News: The National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention said the typhoon which struck on Sunday had ripped off roofs and inundated or knocked over more than 220,000 houses, destroyed nearly 370 fishing boats, and caused other damage.

Danang, a major commercial city and among the most developed in the country, suffered the worst damage.  At least 22 locals reportedly died in the storm, four are missing, and 61 seriously injured.

Property damage in Danang city alone is estimated at over VND5.29 trillion (US$330 million).

Over 83,000 houses were destroyed or had their roofs blown off, 320 fishing vessels were damaged, and over 20,000 trees uprooted.

The city has distributed relief of VND41 billion ($2.5 million) in cash, 1,000 tons of rice, and 1 million packs of instant noodles to victims.

Xangsane, the 18th storm of this year's Pacific cyclone season and the 6th to hit Vietnam this year, killed at least 161 when it hit the Philippines four days ago.

Last year about 50 people were killed when eight typhoons and tropical storms hit Vietnam.
